Intrepid adventurer, Chris Olsen, visited Gymea North on Wednesday to share his experiences in Antarctica with Stage 3. We were able to get a feeling for life in the harsh conditions of the coldest continent on Earth. Tents, clothing and gear were examined and tried on, and we were given the opportunity to see and touch parts of Mawson's historic hut as well as ice from the Antarctic Peninsula. The wildlife that Chris photographed was amazing and his stories kept us entertained.
Chris also involved us in a craft activity where we constructed a 3D model of a penguin using plastic bottles, felt and feathers. To conclude the morning's incursion he demonstrated the use of an ice-pick on a solid block of ice. Chris gave us a great insight into the continent we have been studying in Geography and we greatly appreciate his visit.
